John 1 [Commentary]
1. In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
2. He was in the beginning with God. The same was in the beginning with God. He was in the beginning with God.
3. All things came into being through Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. All things came into being through him, and without him not one thing came into being. What has come into being
4. In Him was life, and the life was the Light of men. In him was life; and the life was the light of men. in him was life, and the life was the light of all people.
5. The Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it. And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it.
6. There came a man sent from God, whose name was John. There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. There was a man sent from God, whose name was John.
7. He came as a witness, to testify about the Light, so that all might believe through him. The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all men through him might believe. He came as a witness to testify to the light, so that all might believe through him.
8. He was not the Light, but he came to testify about the Light. He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light. He himself was not the light, but he came to testify to the light.
9. There was the true Light which, coming into the world, enlightens every man. That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world. The true light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the world.
10. He was in the world, and the world was made through Him, and the world did not know Him. He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not. He was in the world, and the world came into being through him; yet the world did not know him.
11. He came to His own, and those who were His own did not receive Him. He came unto his own, and his own received him not. He came to what was his own, and his own people did not accept him.
12. But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believe in His name, But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: But to all who received him, who believed in his name, he gave power to become children of God,
13. who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God. Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. who were born, not of blood or of the will of the flesh or of the will of man, but of God.
14. And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth. And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth. And the Word became flesh and lived among us, and we have seen his glory, the glory as of a father's only son, full of grace and truth.
15. John *testified about Him and cried out, saying, "This was He of whom I said, `He who comes after me has a higher rank than I, for He existed before me.' John bare witness of him, and cried, saying, This was he of whom I spake, He that cometh after me is preferred before me: for he was before me. (John testified to him and cried out, "This was he of whom I said, 'He who comes after me ranks ahead of me because he was before me.'")
16. For of His fullness we have all received, and grace upon grace. And of his fulness have all we received, and grace for grace. From his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace.
17. For the Law was given through Moses; grace and truth were realized through Jesus Christ. For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ. The law indeed was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.
18. No one has seen God at any time; the only begotten God who is in the bosom of the Father, He has explained Him. No man hath seen God at any time; the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him. No one has ever seen God. It is God the only Son, who is close to the Father's heart, who has made him known.
19. This is the testimony of John, when the Jews sent to him priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, "Who are you?" And this is the record of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, Who art thou? This is the testimony given by John when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, "Who are you?"
20. And he confessed and did not deny, but confessed, "I am not the Christ." And he confessed, and denied not; but confessed, I am not the Christ. He confessed and did not deny it, but confessed, "I am not the Messiah."
21. They asked him, "What then? Are you Elijah?" And he *said, "I am not." "Are you the Prophet?" And he answered, "No." And they asked him, What then? Art thou Elias? And he saith, I am not. Art thou that prophet? And he answered, No. And they asked him, "What then? Are you Elijah?" He said, "I am not." "Are you the prophet?" He answered, "No."
22. Then they said to him, "Who are you, so that we may give an answer to those who sent us? What do you say about yourself?" Then said they unto him, Who art thou? that we may give an answer to them that sent us. What sayest thou of thyself? Then they said to him, "Who are you? Let us have an answer for those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?"
23. He said, "I am A VOICE OF ONE CRYING IN THE WILDERNESS, `MAKE STRAIGHT THE WAY OF THE LORD,' as Isaiah the prophet said." He said, I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness, Make straight the way of the Lord, as said the prophet Esaias. He said, "I am the voice of one crying out in the wilderness, 'Make straight the way of the Lord,'" as the prophet Isaiah said.
24. Now they had been sent from the Pharisees. And they which were sent were of the Pharisees. Now they had been sent from the Pharisees.
25. They asked him, and said to him, "Why then are you baptizing, if you are not the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?" And they asked him, and said unto him, Why baptizest thou then, if thou be not that Christ, nor Elias, neither that prophet? They asked him, "Why then are you baptizing if you are neither the Messiah, nor Elijah, nor the prophet?"
26. John answered them saying, "I baptize in water, but among you stands One whom you do not know. John answered them, saying, I baptize with water: but there standeth one among you, whom ye know not; John answered them, "I baptize with water. Among you stands one whom you do not know,
27. "It is He who comes after me, the thong of whose sandal I am not worthy to untie." He it is, who coming after me is preferred before me, whose shoe's latchet I am not worthy to unloose. the one who is coming after me; I am not worthy to untie the thong of his sandal."
28. These things took place in Bethany beyond the Jordan, where John was baptizing. These things were done in Bethabara beyond Jordan, where John was baptizing. This took place in Bethany across the Jordan where John was baptizing.
29. The next day he *saw Jesus coming to him and *said, "Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world! The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world. The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him and declared, "Here is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!
30. "This is He on behalf of whom I said, `After me comes a Man who has a higher rank than I, for He existed before me.' This is he of whom I said, After me cometh a man which is preferred before me: for he was before me. This is he of whom I said, 'After me comes a man who ranks ahead of me because he was before me.'
31. "I did not recognize Him, but so that He might be manifested to Israel, I came baptizing in water." And I knew him not: but that he should be made manifest to Israel, therefore am I come baptizing with water. I myself did not know him; but I came baptizing with water for this reason, that he might be revealed to Israel."
32. John testified saying, "I have seen the Spirit descending as a dove out of heaven, and He remained upon Him. And John bare record, saying, I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it abode upon him. And John testified, "I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it remained on him.
33. "I did not recognize Him, but He who sent me to baptize in water said to me, `He upon whom you see the Spirit descending and remaining upon Him, this is the One who baptizes in the Holy Spirit.' And I knew him not: but he that sent me to baptize with water, the same said unto me, Upon whom thou shalt see the Spirit descending, and remaining on him, the same is he which baptizeth with the Holy Ghost. I myself did not know him, but the one who sent me to baptize with water said to me, 'He on whom you see the Spirit descend and remain is the one who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.'
34. "I myself have seen, and have testified that this is the Son of God." And I saw, and bare record that this is the Son of God. And I myself have seen and have testified that this is the Son of God."
35. Again the next day John was standing with two of his disciples, Again the next day after John stood, and two of his disciples; The next day John again was standing with two of his disciples,
36. and he looked at Jesus as He walked, and *said, "Behold, the Lamb of God!" And looking upon Jesus as he walked, he saith, Behold the Lamb of God! and as he watched Jesus walk by, he exclaimed, "Look, here is the Lamb of God!"
37. The two disciples heard him speak, and they followed Jesus. And the two disciples heard him speak, and they followed Jesus. The two disciples heard him say this, and they followed Jesus.
